The foundation of confident decision-making.

We deliver impartial, standardised on-board vessel assessments, trusted by the maritime industry to provide a single, consistent picture of condition.

Each inspection follows our globally recognised 500+ point methodology, verified through central quality control to ensure accuracy and objectivity. Our global surveyor network operates in more than 100 countries, combining deep technical expertise with a consistent reporting framework to deliver clear, chart-led reports and a transparent 0-100 Idwal Grade.

This combination of technical precision, independence, and global reach ensures every inspection is factual, comparable, and defensible, the foundation of confident decision-making for owners, operators, lenders, and insurers.

A structured approach to vessel condition

Idwal inspections are comprehensive physical assessments carried out using a consistent checklist applied across vessel types, trades and geographies. This ensures every inspection is comparable, repeatable and grounded in evidence.

Each inspection captures the condition of the vessel at the time of survey, while also providing critical context around how that condition has developed and how it is being managed.

What we inspect

Our inspections go far beyond surface condition. We assess the structural integrity, operability and readiness of the vessel’s critical systems, alongside the standards by which it is maintained and operated.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Hull and structure, including corrosion, coatings, damage and durability
  • Engine room and machinery, covering main and auxiliary machinery, pipework, systems and maintenance practices
  • Decks, fittings and mooring arrangements, assessing safety, wear and operational readiness
  • Ballast tanks and systems, with a focus on structural condition, coatings and regulatory compliance
  • Bridge and navigation equipment, including operational status, layout and documentation
  • Fire-fighting and lifesaving equipment, reviewed for readiness, condition and maintenance
  • Accommodation and crew areas, providing insight into welfare standards and onboard management
  • Pollution control and environmental systems, including MARPOL compliance and operational condition
  • Cargo systems and vessel-specific equipment, assessed against intended trade and vessel type

Looking beyond the physical

In addition to physical condition, Idwal inspections assess how the vessel is managed in operation. This includes planned maintenance systems, safety management practices, crew welfare and performance, classification and certification status, and port state control history.

This dual focus allows stakeholders to understand not just what condition the vessel is in, but how likely that condition is to be sustained.

Consistency, comparison and clarity

The value of an inspection lies in its consistency and transparency. By applying the same methodology, inspection logic and weighting across thousands of vessels worldwide, Idwal enables assets to be assessed in context, not isolation.

That consistency underpins trust in Idwal inspections and allows vessel condition to be compared meaningfully across fleets, markets and time.
